Meet Channing R. Barnett, M.D.

Educated and trained at Princeton University, Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Columbia University Medical Center, Dr. Channing Barnett, M.D has been practicing since 2009. She is board certified by the American Board of Dermatology with particular expertise in dermatologic and cosmetic surgery. Dr. Channing Barnett believes in maintaining the healthiest skin possible by using minimally invasive procedures for maximum skin care results and long-term benefits. She is the daughter of the late Dr. Jay G. Barnett who practiced dermatology on the Upper East Side of New York City for 45+ years.

Dr. Barnett has published a number of papers in various medical and surgical journals and contributed to several online publications and book chapters. She has also studied with distinguished dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons across both the United States and Europe in an effort to learn from the most reputable and innovative physicians in the field.

A native New Yorker and graduate of The Spence School, Dr. Barnett developed an early interest in dermatology while spending time with her late father, Dr. Jay G. Barnett, in his office as a young girl. Her early exposure to dermatology and skincare combined with her personal passion for improving the lives of others have cultivated her lifelong commitment to helping patients attain healthy skin, while feeling young, refreshed and self-confident.

Q: What Is the Difference Between Eczema and Psoriasis?

There are many clinical differences between eczema and psoriasis. We’ll highlight a few here:

While eczema is often linked to dry and sensitive skin, psoriasis is commonly linked with other significant health conditions such as diabetes or heart disease.
It’s common for eczema to start in young children, while psoriasis typically doesn’t appear until late teen or early adult years.
Both skin conditions can cause red, itchy patches on the skin. But, upon closer examination, you’ll see that a psoriasis flare-up triggers silvery, scaly, and more inflamed skin.

Q: What Is the Best Treatment for Melasma?

The best treatment for melasma will be determined by the cause of the condition and how deeply the skin has been penetrated.

There may be some instances in which melasma will fade on its own. If this is not the case for you, your dermatologist may prescribe one of several topical medicines including hydroquinone or tretinoin.

There are also cosmetic procedures that can be performed if topical medicines are not effective. These include peels, microdermabrasion, laser treatment, and more.

Q: Can You Tell Me How to Prevent Skin Cancer?

The most effective methods for preventing skin cancer include:

Using broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 15) on a daily basis
Using water-resistant (SPF 30+) sunscreen for extended outdoor excursions
Avoiding prolonged sun exposure and sunburn
Staying away from UV tanning beds
Examining your skin regularly for early-identification of abnormalities
Visiting a dermatologist yearly for a skin exam

Q: Is Cold Sore Prevention Possible?

Unfortunately, once you’ve been infected with the virus that causes cold sores, there is no definitive way to completely prevent future cold sores.

However, there are a few things you can do to lower your number of outbreaks, including:

Identify things that trigger your cold sores and do your best to avoid them (stress, illness, etc.)
Use SPF on your lips and face – sun exposure can cause cold sores to flare
Talk to your dermatologist about prescription preventative cold sore medication

Q: Does CoolSculpting Really Work?

Yes! Studies have shown CoolSculpting to be an effective procedure for fat reduction. However, it is not a treatment for obesity and some people may see a better outcome than others.

CoolSculpting results may also last indefinitely – as long as you avoid future significant weight gain. Once the procedure kills off fat cells, they don’t come back. But future weight gain can trigger fat to populate in the treated areas again.

Q: How Long Does Botox Last?

Some people may see their results from Botox last up to six months, while others may need another treatment in as little as two months.

But, on average, Botox treatments will last between 3-4 months.

It is also common for a patient’s first injection to wear off faster than anticipated but to subsequently see longer results after a second treatment.

Q: How Permanent Is Laser Hair Removal?

The permanency of laser hair removal will vary by the individual. Although it’s commonly advertised as a “permanent” procedure, the reality is that laser hair removal simply triggers hair follicles to go into dormancy for a long time.

When your hair grows back, you’ll notice that there are fewer hairs overall and that they are lighter and finer. Another point to mention is that laser hair removal reduces the number of unwanted hairs in the treated area, but may not get rid of them completely.

That being said, laser hair removal is still a longer-lasting alternative to shaving and waxing.
